Engineered Wood Flooring vs Solid Wood Flooring

Experts and homeowners have a long standing debate whether engineered wood flooring is better than a regular solid wood flooring. If you have a new home or you are thinking of upgrading your flooring game, read on to find out which type of wood flooring is the best for your home.

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring is different than solid wood flooring in a way that the former has multiple layers of the wood. The surface is called the wear layer. This is the visible part that is made up of different types of woods like oak or walnut. The thickness of this layer is 2.5mm – 6mm.

The rest of the layers are made of base layers and they are for the additional strength of the wear layer. They help in making the wood floor strong, stable and durable. The total thickness of the engineered floor could be 18mm but just 4mm is the real wood. The remaining 14mm will be base layers.

Engineered wood flooring has been used in different types of buildings. The thickness varies and depends on the choice of the house owners. You can also choose different types of finishing like oiled, lacquered, brushed and unfinished. The engineered wood flooring has the top layer of some solid wood.

The following are the benefits of engineered wood flooring.

  • It is more cost effective than solid wood flooring.
  • It looks just like solid wood flooring when finished properly.
  • It is more resilient when it comes to humidity and temperature.
  • It is easy to repair and fix when it has been damaged.
  • Installing engineered wood is easy because wood layer is not so thick.

Solid Wood Flooring

You can understand solid wood flooring as a single layer of solid and hard wood. It doesn’t have many layers like the engineered wood flooring. In solid wood floors, the whole layer is hard wood and it is more compact, hard and durable. The wood used for the layer comes from different spices of trees.

The wood is taken and turned into planks using a machine. The planks are directly cut in a way that they can fit into the solid wood. The whole layer of the solid wood is real wood and above it, you can use any finishing that matches the wood color and texture.

However, the solid wood floors are more popular because they create a luxurious look and feel. Installation may be bit difficult because you have to take care of fitting while placing the wood planks. However, the choice depends entirely on the house owners. It is stapled down and can never be installed on a floating floor.

Here are the benefits of solid wood flooring.

  • It is a traditional style that gives luxurious look to the floor.
  • The planks used are real hardwood making floor strong.
  • Sanding and refinishing options can be used anytime when required.
  • The solid hardwood is more durable with longer life expectancy.
  • The solid wood planks can be chosen in any size, dimension and thickness.
